23 Feb Cloud CFD Advantages – Part 3 of 4: Accessibility
There is an unstoppable trend in the CFD software industry: we are all moving on the Cloud. This process has been happening in a lot of contexts, some of them similar to CFD (like CAE in general) and some quite different (software management, PLM, CRM, etc). It is considered the next future by a lot of experts.
In the software sector it basically means a change from the Software-as-a-Product (SaaP) to the Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) paradigm. This epochal change is a huge opportunity for both software vendors and providers as much as for software users. There are a lot of advantages that can be found, and especially in the CFD field, some of them are quite relevant.
We grouped them in four categories: Financial, User experience, Accessibility, Hardware. After the first post about the financial aspects, the second one about the user experience, this post will briefly review the third of the series: the accessibility advantage.
Sharing experiences is something we are starting to take for granted. Apart from all the social network noise, it can be considered as a new dimension of technology usage. And it has an important impact on the work life too.
There are many reasons why sharing can play a major role among professionals:
- CoWorking from remote locations. Working together on the same project, in the same screen, can increase productivity up to 50% improving interactions and problem solving.
- Support and training. If problems come out, the possibility to show how they look like without any data exchange makes support rapid and accurate. Training can also become more effective, reducing the learning curve steepness.
- Results sharing and analysis. Once results are obtained, they can be useful to more than one department or specialist. The centralization of data accessible by every user in the game is a key advantage.
The Cloud approach allows to work side by side even if the users are in locations miles away, making all above features reality.
Maintaining a centralized work space has additional advantages besides those related with multi-user access.
Your simulation is always accessible, no matter where you are, if inside your headquarter or in another branch. You can check how your work is proceeding or your simulation results from everywhere you have an internet connection available.
If you want to show your results to your customers, you can just access them from a standard workstation with a browser, and you will be redirected to your personal account.

When properly leveraging the Cloud infrastructure, it is possible to make highly complex software accessible through very light terminals as personal computers and even tablets. If the computational burden is all managed by the server, the client is left with just few operations and can proceed flawlessly.
In our case, making a complete CFD software (from geometry processing to results analysis) accessible through a light terminal was a huge challenge. We are able to exploit some of the most advanced software and infrastructure technologies to make it possible and free the user from the high investment barrier of high performance hardware.
