30 Jun CONSELF and Onshape to boost engineering cloud simulations
With 2.4 release CONSELF and Onshape join forces to make state of the art, engineering simulations available to everyone. CAD software is a fundamental tool in manufacturing industries. CFD and FEM simulations are innovative resources that make product optimization faster and cheaper. Starting today, every engineer can rely on this wonderful couple to perform a complete analysis inside a common web browser exploiting modern cloud computing.
Onshape | Full-Cloud CAD
Onshape is the first and only full-cloud 3D CAD system that lets everyone on a design team simultaneously work together using a web browser, phone or tablet.
It is a professional 3D CAD. You can create complex parts, assemblies, and detailed drawings all within your web browser. It allows you to easily define parameters and relationships to easily modify designs and use mates to build realistic assembly motion.
Leveraging the Cloud approach, you can collaborate with your colleagues, vendors and partners in real time and, since it runs in a browser, you don’t have to face painful installs or registrations. There is a free plan, so you can start using a professional tool in two clicks and you can also import existing CAD data, all major file formats in the market are accepted.

The importance of a good CAD model(er)
CFD and FEM simulations start exactly from where CAD ends and in strict relation with it. Once the geometry is known and defined, the user wants to assign a role to different zones of the model (Where does my fluid enters? Where is the force load applied?) and then he needs to mesh it. This technical term – “meshing” – indicates a procedure that aims at creating a discretization of the domain, i.e. dividing surfaces into small 2D elements (faces) and volumes into small 3D elements (cells).
Very careful attention has to be paid when performing the meshing operation since the mesh quality is one of the most important factors on which results accuracy depend. Two of our previous posts explained common mesh issues (“4 mesh issues causing poor CFD simulation accuracy“) and how to locate these zones (“How to spot low quality mesh zones“).
A good CAD model is a necessary condition to obtain good meshes and then accurate results. Professional CAD software provided with the common “Software as a Product” approach can costs at least few thousands €/$ per year for a single license. Onshape and CONSELF, instead, aim at providing every professional worldwide with state of the art tools via the “Software as a Service” paradigm, making them cost-efficient for the first time.
“Create your CAD with Onshape, import it in CONSELF Platform and
start your state of the art Engineering Simulation on the Cloud”
Importing from Onshape in CONSELF | How it works
Importing a CAD model from Onshape in CONSELF is a one-click operation. From inside CONSELF Platform (https://app.conself.com):
- Go to the Simulation tab and create a new case choosing an App from the list and typing a name for your simulation
- In the Geometry step you can upload a CAD model or import it from Onshape.
- Click on the Onshape Import button
- Insert your Onshape credentials and log in
- Select the document you want to import and click Import Geometry
The video on the right shows you all these steps. At this point you are ready to start interacting with the geometry and completing your simulation setup.
Try now with your CAD files! Create your CAD model on Onshape, signup for CONSELF free WELCOME plan and complete your first engineering simulation!
